The Diocese of Wilmington has announced an upcoming major spiritual event, the Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for October 5, 2024, at the Ocean City Convention Center in Ocean City, Maryland. This pivotal event, themed “The Eucharist: Source and Summit,” aims to deepen the faith and fellowship among the Catholic community across Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2011) names the Eucharist as “the source and summit of the Christian life.” (para 1324)

The Most Reverend Richard G. Henning, S.T.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, was recently named by Pope Francis as the next Archbishop of Boston.  Archbishop-elect Henning succeeds Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley who has served in that role since 2003.  Archbishop-elect Henning will be installed as Boston’s tenth bishop and seventh archbishop on October 31, 2024. In April, the Diocese of Wilmington announced that Archbishop-elect Richard Henning would be the keynote speaker at the Eucharistic Congress.  Archbishop-elect Henning will share his insights on the central role of the Eucharist in Catholic life and worship.

“We are excited that Archbishop-elect Henning will be in our diocese to speak about the Eucharist,” said the Most Reverend William E. Koenig, Bishop of Wilmington. “The fact that his presentation will be just weeks prior to his assuming the important role of Archbishop of Boston, adds to the excitement among the Catholic community of Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. We are looking forward to his address.”

In addition to these spiritual activities, the Congress will offer breakout sessions tailored to various interests and age groups, including Youth and Young Adults, Faith and Family, Catechesis, and a dedicated track for Spanish-speaking attendees. These sessions are designed to foster discussion and deepen understanding of the faith across diverse groups.

The event will also host faith-based vendors and feature a ministry fair showcasing the various diocesan ministries that serve our community, providing attendees with opportunities to learn more about and engage with these vital efforts.

“Bringing our community together for the Eucharistic Congress not only reinforces our unity in Christ but also strengthens our commitment to serving and uplifting one another through faith,” Bishop Koenig added. “We look forward to welcoming all who can attend to join us in this celebration of faith and community.”

Family Space

The Diocese of Wilmington is excited to announce a dedicated Family Space at the Eucharistic Congress, set to take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, in Ocean City, MD. This specialized area is designed with our youngest attendees in mind, catering to children up to age 12. The Family Space will offer an assortment of faith-based videos, engaging activities, and interactive games, designed to enrich the spiritual lives of children in a fun and accessible way and offer a break from the schedule of the Congress.

Understanding the importance of family participation in faith activities, we require that at least one parent accompanies their child at all times within the Family Space. This stipulation ensures a safe and nurturing environment for all, promoting a shared spiritual experience that families can carry with them beyond the event. We look forward to welcoming your family to this special space dedicated to our youngest participants.
