Pregnancy Counseling/Parenting and Adoption

Catholic Charities' adoption program helps to establish the legal relationship of parent and child between those who are not so related by birth. The program provides children with permanent homes and new legal parents with the same rights and responsibilities that are inherent in the birthparent/child relationship. It assesses and prepares families for the uniqueness of adoptive parenthood, especially for parenting children with special needs.

The program works with pregnant mothers and birth fathers in making a plan for their unborn child. Pregnancy counseling allows the expecting parent to carry her child with dignity while making well-thought-out decisions. It also assists the birth father to understand his feelings, rights, and responsibilities to himself, the child, and the child's mother. Inquiries from those interested in discussing adoption as an option for an unintended pregnancy are always welcome.

The program offers support and counseling, if needed, to adoptive families and assists those adult adoptees seeking personal background information. Program components include: infant adoption, special needs adoption, stepparent/relative adoption, pregnancy counseling, post-adoption services (including search and reunion). Services include: comprehensive medical and social assessment of the child, birthparents, and adoptive parents; pre-placement care of children; recruitment and preparation of adoptive families; acceptance of parental rights; adoptive placement and supervision; preparation of necessary court documents (petitions, social reports); post-adoption counseling.
