Bookland
Walther Willoughby
1934
“Bookland” executed by Walter Willoughby, is one of a group of Public Works of Art Project
(PWAP) pictures. The Third Regional District of the PWAP left the picture with the Wilmington
Society of Fine Arts in July 1934 for use in Delaware institutions.
“Bookland” was given on indefinite loan to the Children’s Home and remains with Catholic
Charities at its main office.
Running from December 1933 to June 1934, PWAP was the first federal attempt to sponsor the
fine arts. It employed 3,749 artists, working in a wide variety of media. The project hired
established artists and designated the theme of the "American Scene" for subject matter. Artists
created works to embellish nonfederal public buildings - including public schools, orphanages,
libraries, museums and practically every other type of public building. Projects included over
7,000 easel paintings and watercolors, 1,400 murals and sculptures, 2,500 works of graphic art,
and numerous other works.
An 11” x 14” unframed print of Bookland is $25.
An 16” x 20” unframed print of Bookland is $50.
